SCSI (small computer system interface) is a type of interface used for computer components, such as hard drives, scanners and tape drives. SCSI is a competing technology to standard IDE (integrated drive electronics). While the less expensive IDE technology is built into motherboards, SCSI is a technology that must be added by obtaining a SCSI controller. The SCSI card fits into an internal PCI slot inside your computer. SCSI devices are then connected through this SCSI card.
SCSI is a faster, more advanced technology compared to the IDE and has traditionally been used in servers. Aside from speed, another benefit over the IDE is that SCSI cards can connect 15 or more devices in a daisy chain format. The controller assigns each device its own SCSI ID, allowing for greater flexibility in expanding any system. SCSI-I was the first generation to come out, followed by SCSI-II, SCSI-III, and now, in the fifth generation, SCSI V. The SCSI technology continues to improve on speed and connectivity.
