Serial interface is a means of data communication, designed as the bridge between the computer and another electronic device. Connectors are commonly referred to as RS232-Com 1, Com 2 with the D-Sub 9 pins or D-Sub 25 pins (commonly males on the computer). USB (Universal Serial Bus) is the newest serial connector, designed to simplify and standardize the old style serial to the newest style of serial. The USB interface is more streamlined and easier to connect. It delivers higher speed transfer rates and uses fewer wires than the older type of serial. Most devices now come equipped with USB ports to connect directly to your computer, which may have one or more USB connectors. This is the newest means of serial interface.
Parallel interface connectors are another means of communicating from the computer to a device. This interface requires a D-Sub 25 pin female on the computer and requires the use of all 25 lines, transmitting one byte at a time; from pin 1 to 1, pin 2 to 2, and through the sequence. The term "parallel" is used because all the data signal lines run parallel from computer back to printer and from the printer back to computer. Many printers today come with both parallel and USB ports, although some are now using USB exclusively. Parallel ports will sometimes be referred to as "Centronics" connector At OddCables.com, we sell a wide range of these cables to accommodate your cables needs.
